Caring for your new tattoo:
Frequently asked questions:
-- My tattoo looks faded already and it has only been 2 weeks, what is wrong?
Nothing. After the tattoo peels for the first time, a new layer of skin is formed. This new layer tends to be light and milky looking. After another week or 2 that new layer sheds and you will see what your tattoo really looks like! At this point you can talk to your artist about a touch up.
-- Color seems to coming out of my tattoo/ My scabs are colored as if they are pulling ink, what should I do?
This is normal. When a tattoo is done the ink fills to the skins surface. As the tattoo heals the excess ink may come out or it will dry into the scab. Don't worry too much about this. When it heals, if there are light spots or color seems absent, a touch up will fix this.
-- When can I go swimming/tanning?
You can swim in about 2 weeks, or whenever the initial scabs come off. Tanning should be avoided for the first 2 weeks also, and should always be done with caution after that. Make sure your tattoo is covered with sun block (even with tanning beds!)
-- My friend told me that A&D ointment/ antibiotic ointments are the best thing to use, is that okay?
I don't recommend using any petroleum based products like Vaseline, A&D, or antibiotic ointments and creams. These products can heal a tattoo, however it is much easier to misuse these products than it is to use them correctly. These products can make the scabs soggy and/or crack which leads to color loss.
